Security
Over 90% of the earth's surface is covered by water. The sea, inland waterways and marine terminals are where OCIMF members operate, transporting vital resources for commercial and domestic use. This environment is not as benign as it was in the past and is exploited by those who seek to do harm. Maritime security is synonymous to safety presenting unprecedented challenges to operations at sea. Piracy, armed robbery and the effects from state action have changed the way our business is conducted and, more importantly, the way we protect and care for our seafarers and assets.
The Maritime Security Committee provides members an avenue to share best practice, exchange ideas and discuss security problems. A risk based approach is used to identify threats that may cause harm to seafarers, assets, operations or the environment - this drives members priorities and focusses our effort where most needed.
